What are PVC pipes and fittings?
PVC means polyvinyl chloride. Pipe-grade PVC is usually uPVC, the unplasticised and rigid form, which is light, cheap and does not rust. It suits cold water supply, drainage, sewer and irrigation lines.
PVC fittings join with solvent cement, which softens the pipe and socket surfaces so they bond into one piece. CPVC is a chlorinated version that handles higher temperatures, so it can carry hot water where standard PVC cannot.
How to choose and install PVC
- Use pressure-rated PVC for water supply and drainage grade for waste and storm water.
- Choose CPVC for hot water, because standard PVC softens with heat.
- Cut pipe square, remove burrs and clean both surfaces before applying solvent cement.
- Push the pipe fully into the socket with a slight twist and hold it for a few seconds.
- Allow the joint to cure before you pressure test the line.
- Protect exposed PVC from direct sunlight with paint or cover.
Applications of PVC pipes and fittings
- Cold water supply. Carrying pressure water in buildings and estates.
- Drainage and sewer. Removing waste and storm water through PVC pipes and bends.
- Farm irrigation mains. Feeding sprinklers and drip lines across fields.
- Borehole delivery lines. Carrying water from borehole pumps to tanks.
- Rainwater harvesting. Connecting gutters and downpipes to storage tanks.
- Swimming pools. Plumbing filtration and circulation lines.
- Electrical conduits. Protecting buried cables with PVC pipe sleeves.
- Hot water with CPVC. Using CPVC where lines carry warm or hot water.
- Greenhouses. Distributing water and fertiliser solution to beds.
- Ventilation stacks. Venting drainage systems through PVC pipes.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PVC and uPVC?
uPVC is unplasticised PVC, the rigid form used for pipes. In plumbing, people often use the two names for the same pipe.
What is CPVC used for?
CPVC is chlorinated PVC. It handles higher temperatures, so it suits hot water lines.
What sizes of PVC pipe do you stock?
Our PVC pipes, elbows and tees run from 1 1/4 inch up to 8 inch. Use the size buttons to see each size.
How do I join PVC pipes?
Clean both parts, apply PVC solvent cement to the pipe and socket, then push them together fully and hold briefly.
Can PVC carry hot water?
No. Standard PVC is for cold water. Use CPVC or PPR for hot water.
Which PVC glue size should I buy?
Small tins suit a few joints, while larger tins suit big jobs. We stock several sizes from 100 ml upward.
