What is a refrigerant gas?
A refrigerant is the working fluid in a cooling system. It boils at a low temperature in the evaporator, absorbing heat, and then condenses in the condenser, releasing that heat outside. The compressor keeps it moving round the circuit.
Each refrigerant has its own pressures, oil and safety class. For example, R410A runs at higher pressure than R22, R32 and R290 are flammable to different degrees, and blends such as R407C and R404A must be charged as liquid. Therefore, always use the refrigerant shown on the equipment nameplate.
How to choose the right refrigerant
- Use the refrigerant on the equipment nameplate.
- Never mix refrigerants or top up with a different gas.
- Charge blends such as R410A, R404A and R407C as liquid.
- Follow safety rules for flammable refrigerants such as R32, R290 and R600a.
- Recover old refrigerant rather than venting it.
- Use trained technicians and follow NEMA and local rules for controlled substances.
Applications of refrigerant gases
- Split air conditioners. R410A and R32 in modern split and inverter ACs.
- Domestic fridges. R134a and R600a in household fridges and freezers.
- Cold rooms. R404A and R507 in medium and low temperature rooms.
- Supermarket refrigeration. Display cases and plug-in coolers on R290 or R404A.
- Chillers. R134a and R407C in many water chillers.
- Vehicle air conditioning. R134a in many car and truck AC systems.
- R22 replacement. R407C as a common retrofit option for some R22 AC systems.

Frequently asked questions
Which refrigerants do you stock?
R410A, R32, R134a, R404A, R407C, R507, R290 and R600a in Maxron, Harp and Westron brands, subject to stock.
Can I use R32 in an R410A system?
No, unless the equipment maker approves it. Use the refrigerant on the nameplate.
Why must blends be charged as liquid?
Their components boil at different temperatures, so vapour charging changes the mix.
Are R290 and R600a safe?
They are hydrocarbons and highly flammable, so only trained technicians should handle them with suitable tools.
What replaces R22?
New systems use R410A or R32. Some R22 systems can be retrofitted with R407C after checking oil and parts.
What details do you need for a quote?
The refrigerant type, cylinder size and quantity.
Do you deliver outside Nairobi?
We supply customers across Kenya, and we also serve buyers in Uganda and Tanzania. We confirm delivery options for your location with the quote.
