R404A is an HFC blend of R125, R143a and R134a (44/52/4 percent). It is used in cold rooms, freezer rooms, display cases, ice machines and transport refrigeration. It has a very high GWP, so lower-GWP options are replacing it in new equipment.

Its global warming potential (GWP) is 3922 on the IPCC AR4 scale, and its ASHRAE safety class is A1 (non-flammable, lower toxicity). Systems on R404A normally use POE oil. Therefore, always use the refrigerant and oil shown on the equipment nameplate.
