What is R410A refrigerant?

A refrigerant is the working fluid that carries heat inside an air conditioner. It absorbs heat as it evaporates in the indoor coil, then releases that heat as it condenses in the outdoor coil.

R410A is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blend made of equal parts by weight of R32 and R125. It contains no chlorine, so it does not damage the ozone layer, unlike R22. However, it has a high global warming potential, so the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol is gradually phasing down HFCs like it. Many new systems now use R32 instead.

R410A vs R32

R32 is a single refrigerant with a much lower global warming potential (675) than R410A (2088), and it is mildly flammable (class A2L). R410A is class A1.

R410A vs R22

R22 contains chlorine and damages the ozone layer, so it has been phased out in new equipment. R410A runs at higher pressure and uses POE oil, so the two are not interchangeable.
