Galvanized Square Plug in Kenya

A galvanized square plug seals the open female outlet of a GI fitting. Its square head gives a firm grip for a spanner or wrench.

Use it to close spare tee branches, drain points and test outlets. In addition, it can be removed later when the outlet is needed.

What is a galvanized square plug?

A galvanized plug is a male-threaded fitting that closes the open end of a female fitting, such as a tee, socket or elbow. It stops flow at that point while leaving the option to reopen it later.

Most plugs have a square or hex head for a spanner. Because they screw in, plugs suit test points, future connections and drain points.

Galvanized iron (GI): Iron or steel coated with a layer of zinc. The zinc corrodes first, so it protects the metal underneath from rust.
BSP thread: British Standard Pipe thread, the common pipe thread in Kenya. Tapered BSP threads (BSPT, ISO 7-1) tighten into a seal as you screw them together.
Nominal size: The trade size of a pipe or fitting, such as 1/2 inch. It names the pipe size, so it is not an exact measurement of the outside diameter.
Thread sealant: PTFE tape, hemp with jointing paste, or an anaerobic sealant applied to male threads. It fills tiny gaps so the joint does not leak.
Plug: A male-threaded fitting that seals a female opening.
Cap: A female-threaded fitting that seals the end of a male-threaded pipe.

Avoid a direct joint between galvanized steel and copper, because the zinc then corrodes quickly. Instead, use a brass adaptor or, better, a dielectric union as the transition.
