An oil separator removes compressor oil from discharge gas and returns it to the compressor.
Size it by refrigerant and capacity. Fit it close to the compressor.
What is an oil separator?
An oil separator is fitted in the discharge line of a refrigeration compressor. It removes oil carried out with the hot refrigerant gas and returns it to the compressor crankcase.
Keeping oil in the compressor improves lubrication and stops oil logging in condensers and evaporators. Therefore, oil separators are common on low temperature and multi-compressor systems.
