What is a flanged gate valve?

A gate valve opens and closes by raising or lowering a flat or wedge-shaped gate across the flow. When fully open, the gate leaves a straight, full bore, so pressure loss is very low.

Gate valves are made for isolation, not throttling. Sluice valves are large gate valves for water mains, resilient seated types seal on rubber, and knife gate valves cut through slurry.
